WOSC Men’s Rodeo Team Wins Ft. Hays University Rodeo
The WOSC Men’s Rodeo Team was led by Chant DeForest to the team title win at the FHSU Rodeo last weekend in Hays, Kansas. DeForest, a sophomore California native, had a great weekend in both the tie down roping and the steer wrestling. After the dust settled, he won third in the short-round and third in the average of the steer wrestling.
Though he is an accomplished steer wrestler, DeForest really excels in the tie down roping. To date, he leads the Regional Standings in the event, as was apparent with his performance last weekend. He placed fifth in the first round and first in the short-round. Overall, his cumulative time of 20.4 seconds on two calves earned him the Tie Down Roping title for FHSU.
Always known for talented tie down ropers, WOSC generally has several ropers qualify in the top ten. This weekend was no different, as three ropers earned a chance to compete in the Sunday Short-Round. Bryson Sechrist, from Apache, qualified for the short-round with a longer 11.7 second time, but his short-round time of 9.4 seconds tied him for first in the round with DeForest and moved him to second in the average.
Lastly, Dalton Richards placed second in the first round with his 10.0 second time. However, his short-round calf kicked free and he took a no-time, thus taking him out of the average.
Billy Boldon, the sophomore from South Dakota, won fifth in the first round of the steer wrestling. However, he drew a steer that had never been caught in the short-round and Boldon didn’t catch him either.
Every one of the six team members of the men’s team qualified for the short-round, which does not happen often, and is quite an accomplishment for the men. The last two members to qualify were Trey and Braden Harmon who placed third in the first round with a 6.8 second time. Trey missed his head loop in the short-round, so they didn’t place in the round, however they did end-up placing fourth in the average because so few teams caught in the short-round.
The Women’s Team also had a good weekend, with three women qualifying for the short-round. Kelsey Driggers qualified for her first short-round with a great run in the first round of the barrel racing. She had a tougher go of it in the short-round, however, and didn’t pick-up any points.
WOSC generally has at least one girl qualify for the short-round in the goat tying. This weekend, Katelan Watt and Cheyenne Budvarson qualified with times of 8.1 and 7.9 seconds respectively. With those times, Watt placed fourth in the round and Budvarson placed third. Budvarson had a time of 11.6 seconds and Watt a time of 9.0 seconds in the short-round. Watt’s cumulative time of 17.1 seconds allowed her to place in the average, but Budvarson’s longer time took her out of the average.
Going into the last regional college rodeo of the season, WOSC stands a chance to qualify both teams and several individuals to the prestigious College National Finals Rodeo. Much will be determined by the time the dust settles this Saturday evening in Guymon, OK at the Panhandle State University Rodeo.
